April 005: What was your safe place as a child?

"What was your safe place as a child?"

That's it. I know it's not exactly a place but, apart from the Impala's backseat, nowhere and nothing was constant enough to be able to count as a safe place - not when I was a child and not now.

We've always moved a lot, traveled cross-country so many times - moving from motel room to motel room. Bad furnishing to horrible design to really old creaky beds or strange stains on the floor. There was nothing constant - and certainly nothing safe - about those places.

But there was Dean. However crap the bed was, curling up against Dean was the safest I ever felt in the world. Nothing in the world could happen to me there.

I almost liked it better whenever we were short on cash and needed to stay in just one room so that we had to leave the other bed to Dad. Then I could have a reason to curl up against Dean, feel that same safety I did as a kid, when I got "too old" to need the comfort of my brother's bed.

So, my safe place as a child was never a place at all. It was a person. But it was safety, and it was home.

And even now, I know nothing can happen to me if Dean's around.

As long as he's around, everything's okay.
